In Arthurian legend Excalibur was the sword given to King Arthur by the Lady of the Lake. At Arthur's death Sir Bedivere threw Excalibur into the lake and a hand rose from the water, caught the sword, and disappeared. The first sword wielded by Arthur was this sword however which is sometimes mistakenly identified as Excalibur, but was in fact drawn from a stone by Arthur to prove his royalty and was known as the Sword In The Stone.
