The word antique is usually defined as an item which is at least 50 to 100 years old, however Antique Samurai Swords are typically classified as swords that were forged by a sword smith prior to the 1900's. The reason for the distinction is that officers of the Imperial Japanese Army and Imperial Japanese Navy between 1934 and the end of World War II had a sword designated as part of their uniforms, the Shin Gunto.
