At the beginning of the Kamakura Period (1185-1388) large-scale iron mining cultivated the art of swordsmithing, and these artisans were akin to priesthood. During this time period, long before it eventually evolved into the katana, the Samurai carried the Tachi. It was a long, deeply curved sword worn slung from the left side, edge down.
Our version of the Kamakura Tachi has an overall length of 44 inches with a 30 inch hand polished stainless steel blade and a full japanese golden dragon metal cast tsuba handguard. The tsuka handle is finished in a traditional Japanese ito wrap and is accented with a classic gold menuki handle decor. The black imperial sageo cord wrapped saya scabbard is also accented with red leather and gold metal accents throughout.
