Japanese Swords, or Nihonto are the traditional bladed weapons of Japanese history. There are several categories of Japanese Swords which include single edged weapons such as the Tachi, Uchigatana, or Katana as well as double edged weapons such as the Tsurugi. Both single edged and double edged Japanese Swords fall into several main categories based solely on blade length which include large swords with blades that are 3 feet and over like the Nodachi or the Nagamaki; long swords with blades that are approximately 2 feet like the Katana; short shorts with blades that are between 1 and 2 feet long such as the Kodachi or Wakizashi, as well as knives and daggers with blades no longer than 1 foot, such as the Tanto. There is another category in the Nihonto family that also includes pole-mounted weapons, the Naginata which has a wooden shaft with a curved blade on the end similar to a sword and is normally adorned with a tsuba at the hilt, and the Yari which resembles a large spear and has a wooden shaft between 3 to 20 feet long with a straight-bladed double edged dagger on the end.
