The history of the Ninja, or Shinobi as they were known in Japan, is hard to trace as very few records were kept of its existence. Nonuse, the art of stealth, was introduced to Japan in 522 A.D. as a religion practiced by priests but it wasn't until 645 A.D. that the priests perfected their fighting skills and made use of their knowledge of nonuse. In 794-1192 A.D. families fought with one another in attempts to make or destroy empires and their need for spies and assassins grew and the practitioners of nonuse were in great demand, and the ninja was born. Ninja Swords or ninja-to as they were known was the traditional weapon of the Ninja and these Ninja Swords had many advantages. The scabbard was typically made longer than the sword to conceal a hidden compartment for small weapons such as spikes, daggers or poisons. Another use of Ninja Swords were that they could act as a small step by jamming the blade into the ground and the Ninja could use the hand-guard as a step to scale small walls. It was also common to have the tip of the scabbard come off so it could be used as a snorkel to hide under water.
