According to legend, St. George was born to a Christian family during the late 3rd century in Cappadocia. At 17 he joined the Roman army and soon became renowned for his bravery. He served under a pagan Emperor who sent him on many important missions, one of which sent him straight into the den of a dragon. When he drew closer to the dark cavern he witnessed a woman bound to a stake in the ground. As he worked to free the maiden he learned from her that she was to be sacrificed to appease the dragon. As soon as the maiden was freed the dragon emerged from his cavern and charged St. George. He struck the monster with his lance and it shattered on its hard scales. He was dismounted from his horse, but fortunately for him he rolled under the great beast and with his long sword struck under the dragon scaleless wings piercing its heart and it fell dead at his feet.
Our version of The St. George Sword has an overall length of 42 inches with a 33 inch hand polished stainless steel double edge blade. The cast gold metal handle is accented with dark orange colored hardwood and a cast metal guard. The detail of the dragon at the end of the hilt can be seen in the close up image and it is accompanied with a leather sheath.
