Evolution Of Fighting

Fighting offers a lengthy rich history within the storybook of mankind. Even apes, near genetic relatives to our primate ancestors, can be found engaging in fisticuffs with each other. The history of MMA, being an organized sports, dates back to Greco-Roman tradition and continues to thrive at this time.

Pankration is actually a fighting sport invented by the Greeks in the mid 7th century B. C. It was a combat competition with few rules and is the earliest reported record of mma. Pankration was so popular, it was picked up by way of the Romans and renamed pancratium. Rome honored the top pankratiasts with statues and treasure, and the popularity of the sport never waned.

In European countries, during the 1800's, sizable music and dining halls would probably hold no rules fights. These combat tourneys would include a lot of the popular styles of that time period, such as Greco-Roman wrestling, boxing, and a lot of catch wrestling styles. These types of fighting matches became extremely popular, and drew huge crowds whenever they were put on.

Japanese, European and America martial artists met on the Pacific Rim during the early twentieth century to participate in Merikan matches. Japanese slang for American fighting, Merikan became a fighting competition that matched western combat styles versus eastern fighting styles. Each match had rules, such as best of 3 throws and knockdowns, in addition to victories by both submission and knockout.

A critical event from the mixed martial arts timeline, Peter Sauer and Kingfish Levinsky competed inside a mixed style combat match in nineteen thirty six. Levinsky was a heavy weight boxer and Sauer was a catch wrestler fighting under the ring name Ray Steele. Sauer defeated Levinsky in thirty five seconds.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is known as a mixed style martial arts that combines Sambo, wrestling and Judo. It had been developed by way of the Gracie family, a combat sporting family from Brazil. The family unit has generated almost a dozen mixed martial arts fighters, such as Royce Gracie, three time Ultimate fighting championship champion.

The Gracie Family Challenge, along with the tradition of Japanese Shooto wrestling matches, led to the creation in the International Sports Combat Federation in 1999. This officially sanctioned body, the first available, introduced together fighters of each style in brutal melee combat. The creation of the ISCF is credited with bringing MMA from the fringe competitions and into the spot light of sports entertainment. The Army developed their own mixed tournament 6 years later, the annual Army Combatives Championships.

The Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz Ultimate fighting championship fight in 2006 hit all time records in the ppv market, rivaling profits from a few of the world's largest boxing matches. This surged the recognition of mma, and in 2006 the owners with the Ultimate Fighting Championship bought their business rival, the Pride FC from Japan. They combined the fighters of these two leagues and created the most famous mixed style competition up to now.

The popularity of mma seems to be growing daily. Fighters like Ortiz, Liddell, and the Gracie family have worked hard during the history of MMA to bring legitimacy to their one of a kind combat style. Based from the public's reception for this sport, it's certain to flourish for some time.
