How to Build an MMA Workout

Most top tier fighters separate their MMA workout into five minute circuits. Each circuit contains a one minute break in between the circuits. This format mimics modern day MMA fights and how they take place. This type of training is the best to simulate what a fighter's body will go through during a fight.

It is important to warm up before each workout. This can involve exercises such as exercise bikes, skipping/jumping rope, running, jumping jacks, press ups, dips, and pull ups. Overall, warming up the muscles before a strenuous routine is the goal of a warm up.

Improving cardio ability is one of the top priorities to all fighters. This will enable them to be strong not only at the beginning of fights, but deeper into the fight. There are very few successful fighters at the top levels that have cardio that is below par. It is just a necessity to fighters.

After cardio, strength building is also key to a good MMA workout. Strength building and body weight exercises are important because they give a fighter more power in their strikes, a greater ability to takedown an opponent, and also make submissions easier.

Developing good bag work skills is not only vital for strikers, but for all combatants. Bags can be used for throwing and training ground and pound skills as well. But bag work is most often used to develop good striking technique and to work on combinations.

Being able to spar with a training partner will help a fighter simulate combat better than almost any other training. It is important that both fighters understand that they fight at a pace that fosters learning. The point is not to beat each other up and injure each other, but to hone fighting techniques and become better at being a fighter.

We've already mentioned that a bag is important for bag work. But you'll need other equipment to build a successful MMA workout. Most gyms will have all of the equipment you would ever need.

Good nutrition is a cornerstone for a fighter. Although some are successful without solid nutrition habits, this is a rarity. Most fighters understand that their body is a machine and their nutrition is the fuel source. The better fuel they put in their body, the better results they will see.

Developing your mental game is just as important to work on as developing your physical game. Top MMA fighters like Georges St. Pierre make use of psychological trainers to build their mental strength. Staying at the top of the mental game is vital for all fighters.

Overall, it is important to put all of these parts into your MMA workouts to be successful. Not every MMA workout has to have each of these parts, but the entire training regimen should include all of these aspects. It doesn't matter if you're interested in just getting in shape or becoming a fighter, this blueprint will help with both.
