Medieval As A Home Design Theme
Tuesday, April 6th, 2010Medieval may sound intimidating with visions of nobility, war, castles and hard living, but this home design is actually one of the most inspiring and interesting to have. The history of the medieval times explains the style used for homes that applying this theme is like traveling back in time. It is said that medieval design is full of portable and functional objects because of the constant moving of people during the war times. It is also a flexible home theme because of the concept of sharing a home with strangers who were fleeing from war-torn areas.
It is important to keep these colors in mind when planning to decorate a room in your house in a medieval theme. If the room you want to decorate in has little natural light this is the prefect idea for you. To liven up this room's interior use colors like forest green, vibrant red, midnight blue, and canary yellow as your accent colors. Use a light color as your main color so that more light will be reflected and your room will feel larger.
The best thing is to start with walls. Use colorful wall treatments in order to liven up the areas that need more light. You may be interested in adding a stone appearance. It may take a little work and time, but you can create this look by using a sponge to press on light grey paint over a white wall.
To have the complete feel of the medieval period you might like to add small portable furniture to your room. Also display colorfully painted dishes and vases on side tables. Remember to use just a few of these knick knacks otherwise the theme will not be believable. Include an area rug also. These items were common not only because they were easily portable but also because they add warmth to the room.
When you are choosing an area rug for the room, think about the textures that were used in medieval days. This will help you select a theme appropriate area rug. Fabrics that were commonly used were canvas and velvet. Often silk was used by the wealthy as well. Whatever fabric was used was always very brightly colored. In your room this will be of great importance because chances are you will not have the traditional stone flooring that would commonly be found in the time period. An area rug can be used to cover visible flooring to blend the floor into your design. If you do go to the expense of laying tile flooring you feet will appreciate the protection an area rug offers against cold.
Whatever you do make the room something you will enjoy. While the medieval era was well known for being a time of strife, people still had joy in their homes. This theme can actually be quite inspirational if you are open-minded when you are designing the room. Who wouldn't be encouraged by having the room of a king or queen?
Interior Decorating has never been so easy with these solid color area rugs.
