Ninja Swords

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

One of the main reasons parents enroll their children in martial arts is discipline. You have seen it before. A parent enrolls their child in your class expecting you to suddenly and indefinitely whip them into shape so that they never answer back or behave badly. The problem is that their child has a limited attention span and uncontrollable energy.

One of their favorite activities is to fall down on the floor or to hang on your leg. Your job is to make them a disciplined ninja warrior with perfect focus. This type of child can make or break you. They can destroy your very best lesson plan in an instant if you do not pay attention to discipline. Is it possible to meet his parents expectations? Yes it is, and let me tell you how!

Sometimes you might see a website that features a ninja sword and the name of the weapon will be very similar to one of higher quality and will even look exactly like a better well known sword. So the unsuspecting buyer thinks hes getting this unbelievable that no one else has found on a certain sword. Unfortunately he/she learns the hard way that its not what he thought.

It seems that the age of 3 Ω to 4 years old is the youngest age for kids to be accepted into a martial arts program. This basically coincides with the age that a child can begin pre-school and this is no coincidence. So if your child is around 4 years old then he or she will probably be accepted into your local martial arts school. However there are other factors that you should be aware of.

If you lead your class like a drill sergeant and its your way or the highway you can be sure that your class will be poorly attended. The people in the class will probably be good but they will not know how to compromise and they certainly will not take any direction from anyone else but you. Therefore, if you are sick that day, you had better find another drill sergeant to take your place.

If you lead your class by example through positive encouragement, constructive feedback and mutual respect, I believe you will have a much easier time and will create better students both technically and in terms of their attitude.

∑ Do you have realistic expectations for your child? Karate for a 4-year old should be about coordination, focus and fun. It is not about self-defense or hard core discipline at this age. These aspects will be gradually introduced over time as they get older.

∑ Can your child stay focused for about a half-hour at a time? Most young kids have very short attention spans and consequently when teaching karate to a 4-year old an instructor needs to use a series of short but focused drills that flow from one to the other. Be sure to find an instructor who uses this type of method so that your child will maintain interest for the whole duration of the class.

∑Can your child follow one or two-step instructions? Your child needs to be able to follow basic directions in order to function in the karate class.

Everyday Knife, All Day Use

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

Life is a daily struggle. A struggle for growth, a struggle for wealth, a struggle for stature, and ultimately a struggle for survival. It is this reality that made man sought tools to help him in many forms as he ventures to prevail above all those struggles.

Knife is both a tool and a symbol of human struggles. Ever since its invention, knife has been used to aid man his survival. In all the many ways that man uses knives, not one isn't ultimately about his survival. Created originally as a tool for obtaining food, knives of today however are used mainly in preparing it.

As a kitchen utensil, knives cut raw meat and vegetables so that they can be prepared properly into edible pieces to be cooked. They can also be used in cleaning other kitchen utensil that develops some elemental deposits. They can also be used to open can goods.

The popularity of outdoor activities nowadays gave the knife another prominent role. That of an outdoor tool. Upon the recommendation of safety authorities, knives are carried by adventurers engaged in mountain climbing, terrain trekking and camping, among others. Outdoor knives are usually packed with other features uniquely useful for outdoor use and suited for some predictable outdoor eventualities.

Knives are also traditionally considered an apparatus for self defense. While this notion has not always been carried with good intent, it stays very real today. Even girls carry knives to protect themselves from any possible threat, natural and criminal, side by side with pepper sprays.

The character of knife as a defensive tool actually came from the military. When it was still incarnated as a sword, it once was the primary weapon. Nowadays, it remains to be part of a soldier's battle gear only as a side weapon. It is also not anymore designed for combat alone but also for utility purposes. Used in cutting almost anything during field operations, current military knives are more tactical than offensive.

Emergency responders are never without knives when they rush to a scene. Popular entities like the Red Cross, Red Crescent, 911, the Fire Department, the Coast Guard - all keep knives as part of their emergency kit upon responding to an emergency. An emergency response without knife is considered flawed right from the start.

When it was created by man for his survival, it didn't exactly discriminate the moral qualification of those who shall survive. This is the reason why knives are also favorite items for gangs, burglars and an assortment of other criminals. They represent the ugly side of life's daily battles.

In service of man since it was created, there can be no better symbolic and more useful tool to man's daily battles than the knife. Then, now and certainly in the future.
