Aikido is a Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba aka 'O Sensei' or 'Great Teacher'. He learnt several ancient martial arts and combined all the effective techniques into Aikido. The martial art that had the most influence on Aikido is Daito-Ryu Aikijujutsu. O Sensei removed all the brutal and fatal elements from Daito-Ryu Aikijujutsu leaving only techniques that throw or immobilize. Aikido consists mainly of joint locks and throws. Punching and kicking are taught not as the main technique but to compliment the technique. It is used as a distraction, to imbalance and weaken the attacker. Anyone can punch or kick, it takes skill to be able to apply techniques. Most martial arts consist mostly of punches and kicks, that not only hurts the attacker but that also hurts the practitioner. Instead of clashing head on with the attacker and hurting each other, Aikido practitioners are taught ways to blend and redirect the opponents' aggressive energy away from themselves and redirect it towards the aggressor. The attacker gets thrown resulting in minimal hurt to him and no hurt to the Aikido practitioner. Aikido is a compassionate and peace-loving martial gentle yet effective arts that aims to protect not only the Aikido practitioner but even the attacker.
Aikido techniques are very graceful, beautiful and gentle. It is because of this gentle nature that anybody can learn regardless of gender or age. Aikido also provides spiritual and mental calmness to its practitioners. When you are able to apply the techniques correctly and get promoted through the ranks, this also helps to build self-confidence and self-esteem.
Aikido is made up of 3 letters:
Ai which means Harmony, Balance or Unify.
Ki which means Life Energy that is in everyone of us. Chinese people call it Qi.This life energy when used properly is even more powerful than physical strength.
Do which means Way. So Aikido is The Way of Unifying the Life Energy.

Caveman training has really caught on in mixed martial arts circles. It combines old school strength training with traditional exercise to formulate one hell of a full body workout. Although traditionally developed for athletes, it has been expanded for all types of people to help them accomplish all types of goals. It is great for building muscle mass, losing fat or for improving performance in particular activities. So what are the factors that make caveman training so special?
Caveman training will combine traditional conditioning, cardiovascular and strength exercises along with novel strength and conditioning exercises. It may appear as a miss match but it is a calculated combination of the best exercises and principles taken from all different types of strength and conditioning workouts. Let's talk about some of the key principles that make caveman training unique.
The use of novel strength training exercises is a great inclusion. Before all the fancy machines and high tech gizmos, people in the old days built strength with pure hard work. These types of exercises can include things like tire flipping, sandbag clean and press, overhead squats with water filled pipes and sledgehammer swings. Not only is this type of strength training fun and different, it can also feel more functioning to the individual, more 'real world' in its application. Instead of just pushing a metal bar up and down the act of lifting something like a sandbag has a more practical feel to it.
The basic concept of caveman training is really straightforward. It puts lots of emphasis on what we call compound movements. Instead of working out one area of muscles like the biceps or triceps with certain repetitive motions, it works on several areas at once. This way, you build more muscle and also burn the fat. Each exercise is created around certain goals that you want to achieve. In this way, it is custom tailored to what you want. Elements are taken from various styles and synthesized for the best results. Another core concept behind it is that it must be rigorous. By pushing your body to the limit, it gives you the best results possible for your hard work and time. This is useful especially for athletes, who need to train to beat their competitors.
The caveman workout has to be intense in order to get results. For this reason, there are no breaks. You do exercises in a circuit, which usually has four exercises. What this means is that you finish one exercise, and then move immediately to the next. You may do chin-ups quickly for one minute, and then do one minute of presses with a sandbag.
Caveman training can be brutal at times, and this is why it's not for everybody. Martial arts people love the intensity and the challenge of it. They especially like the novel strength training techniques. For many people, however, it's hard to stick with this type of training because it's so intense. It takes serious determination and discipline. If you're not into this kind of challenge, there are lots of other ways to meet your fitness goals.

Alright, therefore you probably realise nowadays Iam a big believer in the value of taekwondo. However the honest truth is that now, 16 years down the road, I'm unable to imagine myself not doing it. I have had a consistent method to obtain exercise, social contact and personal growth throughout my life, and that's something to not be studied lightly.
Which brings me towards the school Eastern Suburbs Taekwondo Sydney Australia (or Bondi Junction Taekwondo as it was when I started). The name lacks the razzamatazz and machismo of some fighting techniques schools but that summarises the method of teaching: forget the attitude plus the ego and return to the fundamentals of the art. Taekwondo should be accessible to everyone, not only the testosterone-enhanced minority.
When I first found Eastern Suburbs Taekwondo, I was immediately stunned at the safe and friendly learning environment,as well as the constant motivation to become better, and adherence on the principles and philosophy of taekwondo: courtesy, modesty, integrity, perseverence, self control and indominatable spirit. I wanted to make that part of my entire life, and have actually done that since.
I discovered that taekwondo really complimented an academically rigorous lifestyle, and yes it contributed greatly to my achievements in this area.
I trained consistently and regularly without compromise throughout the five years of my university career and graduated with distinction and won academic prizes. I found that if I worked my education and activities around taekwondo, and made the principles an integral part of my life, I developed true success, resilience and understanding of my studies along with other aspects of my life.
