"Always defend yourself." It's a cardinal rule in boxing - there's no reason to not apply that to martial arts. You must be able to defend yourself in one way or another.
For the Buddhists, that is the "Circle of Life", or their life force. This permeates us and is a part of us. This space is important to kick boxing and is part of martial arts training.
The Circle of Life is was first defined when Buddhists made karate, which means "empty hands", which refers to the way that they fight. This would eventually become the basis of martial arts.

Do the following: raise your arms to the sky, then move it around, like you're a windmill. Move your arms forward then back. Do something similar with your legs. Lift one leg up as high as you can, then spin, paying attention to the area it covers. Do the same for your other leg. Make sure to pay close attention to the area you're moving through.
This area? This area you've just figured out? It's that Circle of Life we've been talking about. Nothing should get inside there that you don't want. If you don't want something there, you keep it out of there. You fight to protect that area. That area is yours and yours alone.
Training equipment is basically required for people to train alone. There needs to be something for them to hit.
