The Fundamental Principles Of Self Defense
Nothing is wrong or underhand when you're under attack. When growing up, and learning to fight, or even in adult-hood, we all learned that particular actions were not acceptable. For example, scratching someone's face or poking someone's eyes. However, you're no longer in the playground, and your life is at risk, thus, do whatever is necessary, even if it goes against everything that you've been taught before.
So, pulling hair, eye gouging, biting, etc. can all be used if necessary. You can also make use of any objects nearby to throw at, or fend off, your attacker. Remember that you only want to defend yourself though. Once you have successfully defended yourself, you stop your actions and flee.
If you find yourself in a threatening situations, waiting for your assailant to get the first blow is never a good idea. As soon as you get hit, then you're at a disadvantage, as you become unbalanced and suffer from a form of shock. Giving your assailant the upper hand goes against any self defense technique principle. As soon as it becomes clear that immediate escape is not an option, then your sole focus should be on making the first blow yourself.
When in a physical position with your assailant, remain as close to the attacker as you possibly can. The closer you are to the person trying to harm you, the less likely that person is to be able to hit you. Most self defense techniques are meant close up confrontations, so you want to be a position that lets you use what you know.
Once you've closed the distance, try to get the assailant to the ground by tipping, kicking them in the knee, or even wrestling if necessary. Gaining a top position on the ground gives you the perfect opportunity to strike them with less chance of getting hurt yourself. After getting on top of them, pummel them with your elbows and knees.
