Halo is set in 2552 after the United Nations Space Command began a program of interstellar travel and planetary colonization. Many planets are quickly colonized and categorized as Inner and Outer Colonies. The Inner Colonies, being closer to Earth, are more developed and politically stable but the distant and relatively ignored Outer Colonies errupt in civil war. The UNSC creates the SPARTAN Project to covertly suppress these rebellions but when communications is lost with one colony, a ship is sent to investigate but is destroyed by aliens bent on exterminating humanity. When the aliens known as the Covenant arrive at another colony the last SPARTAN Master Chief is dispatched. The Halo Energy Swords or Halo Plasma Swords are the weapons wielded by the Covenant Senior Elite, shaped and held into a blade like form by a small magnetic-field generator built into the handle. The Halo Energy Swords or Halo Plasma Swords can cut through almost anything with just one swipe, making it the most popular melee weapon for close quarter combat.
